Political career

When he stood for governor of Anambra state in 2003 as a representative of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) political party, Obi’s political career gained prominence.

Dragged Ngige and INEC to court

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pronounced his rival, Chris Ngige of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the victor (INEC). Under the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, Ngige is the minister of labor.

Ngige’s triumph was contested in court, and on March 15th, 2006, the Court of Appeal determined that Peter was the rightful victor.

Resumed office; impeached 7 months later

He returned to work on March 17, 2006. After serving for seven months, he was impeached by the State House of Assembly on November 2, 2006, and his deputy, Virginia Etiaba, became the first female governor of Nigeria.

On the 9th of February 2007, the Court of Appeal in Enugu reinstated Obi after he had returned to court to contest the impeachment.

After the court’s decision, Etiaba returned the power to him.

Challenged Andy Uba’s emergence as governor

Obi left his position as governor on May 29, 2007, after Andy Uba won the general elections. He challenged Uba’s election in court, arguing that the four years he had won in 2003 had only begun to count when he took office in March 2006 and that he should be let to serve out the remainder of his four-year term.

On June 14, the Supreme Court of Nigeria sided with him and mandated Uba’s resignation in favor of Obi. Up until March 2010, he was a governor serving his first term.

Second-term governor of Anambra state

On February 7, 2010, Peter Obi, who had defeated Professor Charles Soludo, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was proclaimed the victor of the 2010 Anambra governorship election.

He turned over to Willie Obiano as governor of Anambra State on March 17, 2014, after serving his second term.

Obiano served two terms as governor and then turned the reins over to Charles Soludo, who had won the election on November 10, 2021.

On October 7, 2014, Peter Obi formally leaves APGA and joins the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Goodluck Jonathan named Peter Obi the head of the Nigerian Security and Exchange Commission after winning the 2015 presidential election (SEC).

Presidential ambition

On March 24, 2022, Peter Obi announced his desire to run for president in 2023 on the Peoples Democratic Party platform (PDP).

Peter Obi made his resignation from the PDP and withdrawal from the party’s presidential primary election official on May 25.

Two days later, on May 27, 2022, Peter said that he is a member of the Labour Party (LP) and that he will be running for president on the platform of that organization.

After Pat Utomi and other contenders withdrew, Peter Obi was announced as the LP’s presidential candidate on May 30.

Peter Obi’s Source of Wealth

Peter Obi said in an Arise TV broadcast that he was the only engineer at South African Breweries during the Pandora Paper affair. In addition, he was bringing Ovaltine.

He abandoned the business I was working for for my brother, who took over and paid him off. That business changed its name to Next Cash and Carry, which is now located in Abuja and Port Harcourt.

Before becoming a governor, he was a member of the boards of three banks and chairman of another.
