As they rallied to grab a draw against a struggling Chelsea team at the City Ground on New Year’s Day, Nottingham Forest gave themselves a chance to avoid relegation this year.
Raheem Sterling’s early strike from the 16th minute was cancelled out by Ivorian Sergie Aurier’s close-range shot in the 63rd minute.
The team of Steve Cooper welcomed Chelsea on Sunday after six consecutive victories at home in all competitions.
Cooper made several tactical adjustments, including moving Taiwo Awoniyi from a wide to a more central position, and Forest, who had played second fiddle for much of the first half, turned the game around.
Even though he didn’t score, Awoniyi caused trouble for Chelsea’s back men by pushing them and limiting their forward movement.
After a 1-1 draw, Forest climbed off the bottom of the standings and is now level for 17th place with West Ham in terms of points.
